Fillings and Sealants

Some of the most common procedures we perform are sealants and fillings. Most people will have at least one cavity in their lives, making it one of the most common preventable conditions. At Awesome Smiles, we use sealants to help prevent decay and fillings to seal your tooth after we remove decay.

What Causes Dental Decay?

Bacteria love sugar because it provides them with fuel. Sugar comes not only from sugary snacks, but also from starchy foods like chips, crackers, popcorn, and bread that begin to convert to sugar as you chew. Bacteria create an acidic environment that softens your enamel over time. Once the bacteria break through your protective enamel layer and find themselves inside the softer dentin in your tooth, they can cause serious damage.

We use the latest diagnostic tools to catch decay early. The faster we find it, the easier and less invasive it will be to treat.

Treating Dental Decay

Decay does not heal on its own and tends to get worse over time. In order to preserve your tooth and protect your health, we need to remove the bacteria and decay inside your tooth and replace it with a tooth-colored filling. Because we want you to feel comfortable, we will provide anesthetic, when necessary. Most patients do not like shots, but we have a special device that allows us to deliver nearly painless shots. For some small fillings, you might not even need one!

Next, Dr. Kathy Nguyen will gently remove all traces of decay. She will sterilize the area to make sure that she eliminates all bacteria. Then she will prepare your tooth for a filling and apply the composite material, allowing it to harden. Composite comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades, and we will find one that matches your tooth so well that it will be virtually undetectable.

Once she completely fills your cavity, she will shape and polish it as well as making any final adjustments so that it fits your bite comfortably.

We believe that providing the best care possible is important; that is why we provide our patients with high-quality composite fillings that look great and last a long time.

Preventive Sealants

Sealants are protective coatings that we place over the chewing surface of your teeth to act as a barrier against food and bacteria. Dental sealants are non-invasive, do not require anesthetic, and can help to prevent tooth decay for up to five years. Sealants are extremely affordable and a great option for people prone to decay or patients with deep groves in their teeth.
